F-1 interviews are short, often only a few minutes, so every answer counts. There are no secret right answers. Officers want to hear that you're a genuine student, that your funding is real, and that your plans make sense, in your own words.
Study plans and university
- Why did you choose this university?
- Why this program? How does it connect to what you studied before?
- Which other universities did you apply to? Where were you admitted?
- What will you study in your first semester?
- For master's and PhD students: what is your research about?
Name something specific: a course, a lab, a professor or a feature of the program. "It's a good university" tells the officer nothing.
Funding
- Who is paying for your studies?
- What does your sponsor do, and how much do they earn a year?
- How much will your first year cost?
- Do you have a scholarship? How much is it?
Know your numbers and keep them consistent with your I-20 and documents. See sponsor questions.
Ties and plans after graduation
- What will you do after you graduate?
- Why not study in your home country?
- Do you have family in the United States?
- Do you have any concerns about returning home?
Under U.S. law (section 214(b)), officers start by assuming you intend to immigrate until you show otherwise. Talk honestly about your family, a career path at home and why this degree helps it.
How to answer well
- Answer the question asked, in one to three clear sentences.
- Speak in your own words. Memorized scripts sound memorized.
- Be specific: names, numbers and real plans.
- Be truthful. Inconsistent or false answers do more damage than an imperfect one.
- Speak up and slow down. Nerves make most people rush.
Stamplio asks these questions out loud, follows up like an officer, and tells you plainly afterwards where you were vague, rushed or hard to hear. Try a practice interview
Visa rules and fees were checked in October 2026 and can change at short notice. Always follow the official embassy and government pages. Stamplio is a practice tool: it can't predict or influence a visa decision.
Frequently asked questions
- How long is an F-1 visa interview?
- Often only a few minutes, so short, clear and specific answers matter.
- What is the most common F-1 interview question?
- Why you chose your university, who is paying for your studies, and what you will do after graduation come up in almost every interview.
- Should I memorize answers for my F-1 interview?
- No. Know your facts and numbers, but answer in your own words. Practicing out loud helps more than memorizing.
